Pierre-Isnard Amy, 36, died after being shot in the taxi he was driving on Doremy near Laus in St. Leonard at 2:15 a.m. on March 24.
He thus became the first Montreal murder victim of 2016.
Two men, aged 25, and 26, were detained but released following the shooting.
Police did not have enough evidence to charge the duo but are surely combing the taxi for physical evidence.
Taxis are supposed to have video cameras installed inside but this one did not, as taxi owners have until the end of this year to so equip their hacks. (It's possibly worth noting that an Uber cab would have noted the identity of the passengers.)
The killing was not motivated by theft or argument, police have concluded.
This suggests that the killing was possibly planned in advance.
Pierre-Isnard Amy's Facebook profile was loaded with tributes.
Amy was born in Haiti and was active as a DJ at the Kiss Lounge in past years and also had a been a nightclub DJ for hire.
Last October Amy told a friend that he was no longer going out to nightclubs, which indicates a possible issue.
He also listed his employer as the Bureau Canadien d'Investigation et Ajustement, a company that went bankrupt with $20 million in debts in 2010 under owner Luigi Coretti who was later charged with fraud and also ran into more trouble two years later after allegedly contacting witnesses involved in his case.
This is not to suggest, however, that the killing was in any was connected to those events which occurred years ago.
