The Chez Francis strip club on Cote de Liesse at Halpern in Dorval could be the next domino to fall in the ongoing closures of Montreal strip clubs.
The building and property have been for sale for four months at an asking price of $975,000 but serious offers will be considered.
The 25,000 square foot property at the northwest corner was opened as a strip club by an ex-motorcycle cop about 40 years ago.
(The other Dorval strip club The Source du Sexe across from the license bureau, was also owned by a former cop).
The Chez Francis was originally called the Place Cote de Liesse but changed its name somewhere along the line perhaps when the manager became owner.
The club has a month-to-month lease, so any future owner could shut the strip club down pretty fast and without compensation, according to what I have been told, although Coolopolis's pool of interns heard a slight variation of that explanation.
This suggests that it will probably be closed as a strip club.
Dorval municipal authorities are very keen to have a non-strip club inhabit the premises so the owner would have the enthusiastic support to build some other sort of commerce on the property but a residential development would not be permitted under current zoning.
The strip club business appears to be in freefall, as evidenced by the closure of several local establishments over the last few years but the reason for the decline is unclear.
Some cite internet porn, competition from massage parlours and escorts who have improved their marketing through online ads.
